Gastroscopy Procedure

About Gastroscopy

A comprehensive diagnostic procedure designed specifically for children to examine the upper digestive tract and detect any abnormalities.

Comprehensive Examination

A flexible tube with a camera at the end is used to examine your child's oesophagus, stomach and first part of small intestine (duodenum) in detail. This procedure is often used to diagnose eosinophilic oesophagitis and reflux conditions.

Safe & Comfortable

Gastroscopy in children is performed under general anaesthetic, ensuring your child remains comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure.

Tissue Analysis

Biopsies are taken during the procedure - small samples of tissue that are examined by a pathologist for any abnormalities or conditions.

  • Chronic abdominal pain or heartburn
  • Suspected coeliac disease (biopsy for diagnosis)
  • Suspected eosinophilic oesophagitis
  • Blood in vomit or black/tarry stools
  • Iron deficiency anaemia with no obvious cause

What to Expect — Before & After

  • Pre-procedure fasting instructions (clear fluids up to 2 hours before, no solids 6+ hours before)
  • General anaesthetic administered by a specialist paediatric anaesthetist
  • Procedure takes approximately 10–20 minutes
  • Child recovers in a monitored recovery area
  • Results and biopsy findings discussed at follow-up appointment
  • Most children return to normal activity the same day

Referral & Medicare: A current GP or specialist referral is required for Medicare rebates on the procedure and anaesthetic.
